Loneliness is a very human condition, when one feels disconnected to something outside of oneself. We all have an need to belong, and if that need is not met, loneliness and even alienation can occur. But it can be a very destructive emotion if left unattended.

Sometimes loneliness begins in early childhood as a result of such activities as rejection, bullying, loss of close family/friends, and often it is experienced in adulthood as a response to relocations, changing careers, death of parents/loved ones, and other life transitions. It can feel as though there is a dark shadow following you around, or a hole in your soul.

Chronic loneliness can predispose you to immediate and long-term negative consequences. Thoughts of self-harm or even harm to others, low self-esteem, addiction, and depression have far-reaching effects on your life and your loved ones.
